If your heat pump isn’t heating properly during frosty mornings — you’re not alone. Many BC homeowners see reduced output, longer run times, or cold air blowing indoors. Before calling for repairs, here are 3 quick checks you can do yourself to rule out simple issues.
✅ 1. Check for Frost or Ice Buildup Outside
Look at the outdoor unit — is it coated in frost or ice? Some frost is normal, but if it’s fully iced over and not defrosting within 5–10 minutes, the system might be struggling.
⚠️ Don’t chip ice manually — it can damage the coil.
What to do:
- Ensure nothing blocks airflow (leaves, snow, garbage bins)
- Watch for defrost cycle — fan should stop briefly, steam may rise
- If no defrost cycle happens, contact a technician
🧼 2. Clean or Replace Air Filters
Dirty indoor filters reduce airflow, causing the system to overwork and underheat — especially in cold weather.
What to do:
- Check your return grille or ductless head
- If it’s dusty, vacuum or replace the filter
- Repeat every 1–2 months in winter
⚡ 3. Look at Your Thermostat Settings
Some thermostats reset after power outages or lose backup battery memory. Others may have switched to “cool” or “fan” mode by mistake.
What to do:
- Set mode to “heat” or “auto”
- Increase temperature by 2–3°C and listen for unit start
- Confirm time and schedule settings
🔁 Still Not Working Right?
It might be a sensor issue, defrost control board failure, or low refrigerant. We can run a full diagnostic and get your system back to full heat output.
